The spirited activism ignited by Stonewall was initially referred to as the gay liberation movement. But the efforts of gay-identified men and women in New York City encouraged kinfolk to develop their own agendas. Lesbians from the women’s movement coalesced into a separate movement to pursue lesbian feminist liberation. The originator of college associations devoted to issues of sexual orientation demanded recognition for bisexuals. A self-styled "drag queen" created the first political group for middle-class transvestites. Then "street queens" who had fanned the flames at Stonewall banded together. Slowly but surely, this Stonewall-sparked organizing set the stage for what became known as the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered – GLBT for short – Community. In the middle of the 1970s, avant-garde leaders out to emphasize the distinctive contributions of lesbians referred to themselves as "lesbians and gay men." Later, they highlighted the presence of lesbians in their community by calling it the LGBT Community. This Digital Exhibition marks the 35th anniversary of a trailblazing year by displaying actual3buttons, fliers, documents, and images that charted its way. Each scanned presentation comes with my commentary about its origins, context, and significance. The result is a short illustrated history. It shows how every aspect of our contemporary, global community can find roots in the flow of challenge and creation unleashed by Stonewall. Exhibition Contents, About This Author and Exhibitor.
